The outlook for the economy became sunnier on Friday after the Labor Department reported that employers added 295,000 workers in February, far exceeding expectations, and also recorded a drop in the unemployment rate. The data, though, offered disappointing results for wage growth, which for months has barely budged.

The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent from 5.7 percent. But the decline in the rate occurred mainly because some people out of work stopped looking for jobs and were no longer counted as unemployed.
