Some Voices Across Spectrum Call For Trump Impeachment

Several Democrats and a few Republicans have called for articles of impeachment to be filed against President Donald Trump over his Iran war rhetoric and actions.

Democrat Calls: According to The Independent (Lean Left bias), nearly 100 congressional Democrats are part of the call for Trump's removal from office. Rep. John Larson (D-CT), who reportedly filed 13 articles of impeachment against Trump over his actions "invit[ing] blowback against the United States and its citizens risking 9/11 2.0." Accusations from Larson included "serial usurpation of the congressional war power, commission of murder, war crimes and piracy" and "illegally militarizing law enforcement and surging immigration officers into U.S. cities."

Republican Calls: Former Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on X "25TH AMENDMENT!!! Not a single bomb has dropped on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness." Right-wing commentator and host of Infowars (Right), Alex Jones, echoed this sentiment, saying "President Trump has openly announced a plan to conduct the EXACT definition of genocide against the Iranian people! The MADNESS MUST STOP NOW!!" While Republican lawmakers, according to Fox News (Right) are largely "refusing to use the term" genocide, many have been "rattled" by Trump's recent rhetoric.

For Context: These calls followed threats from Trump on Tuesday stating "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again." This was in relation to the 8 PM Tuesday deadline given to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, of which a ceasefire was agreed upon before the deadline was reached.

How The Media Covered It: Some outlets on the left, like The Independent, highlighted commentary from both the Democratic lawmakers, as well as right-wing commentators calling for impeachment. Others, like The Conversation (Lean Left) framed the "bipartisan calls" for removal around what the constitution, and specifically the 25th Amendment says regarding impeachment. Outlets on the right, like Fox News and Breitbart (Right) noted how some Republican officials broke from Trump, but did not mention any of the right-wing commentators calling for impeachment. Newsweek (Center) highlighted a poll sponsored by two progressive advocacy groups showing 52% of registered voters backing impeachment and 40% opposed.
