Summary from the AllSides News Team
As the House select committee probing the Jan. 6 Capitol riot begins to release its findings in public hearings, former President Donald Trump has released a 12-page response on the "sham investigation."
In the statement, Trump accused Democrats of using the investigation "to distract the American people from the great pain they are experiencing" with high inflation, baby formula shortages and other crises. He said Democrats are "desperate to change the narrative of a failing nation, without even making mention of the havoc and death caused by the Radical Left just months earlier," a reference to the summer 2020 protests and riots following the murder of George Floyd.
Trump also rehashed his unsubstantiated claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, and praised Dinesh D'Souza's new documentary "2000 Mules," which Trump said "provides video evidence of the ballot trafficking scheme Democrats have created." Fact-checkers on all sides have said the documentary is misleading and doesn't provide evidence of decisive voter fraud. Trump's statement ends by saying "the United States is being destroyed," and that "we have to Save America."
News sources across the political spectrum covered Trump's response. Some coverage from right-rated sources focused more on Trump's comments about inflation, gas prices and baby formula. Coverage from the left typically focused on disproving Trump's 2020 election claims.

Last week, NBC News highlighted a specific plan crafted by congressional Republican leaders: As the Jan. 6 committee’s hearings unfolded, the GOP would focus its attention on entirely different issues and treat the investigation as an irrelevant sideshow, unworthy of ferocious pushback.
Either Donald Trump didn’t hear about the plan, or he decided not to care about it.
We saw some of this last week, when the former president publicly took issue with Ivanka Trump’s committee testimony. Yesterday, as The New York Times noted, the Republican went even further: “He continued repeating his election conspiracies...

Former President Donald Trump released a 12-page rebuttal Monday in response to evidence presented at the January 6 hearings, likening it to a "Kangaroo Court" to distract the American people before the November midterm elections.
"Our nation is SUFFERING. Our economy is in the gutter. Inflation is rampant. Gas prices have reached an all-time high. Ships are unable to unload cargo. Families cannot get needed baby formula. We are an embarrassment around the world," Trump said in the rebuttal, released through his Save America PAC.
