Trump to Impose Tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China, Over Border Crossings, Drug Trafficking

President-elect Trump announced on Monday that he will sign an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada until "Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"

The Details: Trump also announced he would add a 10% tariff on Chinese imports until it helps stem the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. Mexico, Canada, and China are the United States’ three biggest trade partners. 

China Quote: “I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail… Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff.”

North America Quote: “I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff... This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem.”

Chinese Response: Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said, “the idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the United States runs completely counter to facts and reality.”

How the Media Covered It: Outlets across the spectrum included that the tariffs could drive up prices. Several outlets from the left, like CNN (Lean Left bias) and The New York Times (Lean Left bias) highlighted this more prominently, and suggested the move could cause tensions with the key trade partners.
