Trump Condemns Capitol Breach

President Donald Trump released a two-minute, 41-second video on Twitter Thursday condemning the "heinous attack" on the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Wednesday. He said those who breached the Capitol building Wednesday, many of whom were his supporters, had "defiled the seat of American democracy" and "do not represent our country." He acknowledged that a "new administration will be inaugurated January 20th" and said he's focused "on a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power." Trump called for Americans to "revitalize the sacred bonds of love and loyalty that bind us together as one national family"; he also continued calls for election reforms "to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections." Dozens were arrested, more than 50 police officers were hurt and five people died as a result of Wednesday's chaos. Trump's statements made headlines across the spectrum. Many reports, particularly from left-rated outlets but also from center and right-rated sources, often framed the remarks as past due and focused on Republican lawmakers who criticized his response to Wednesday's events.
