US Sets Highest Number of New COVID-19 Cases Over the Weekend

On Saturday, the United States added 83,718 new cases, which marks the second-highest single-day number after the 83,757 infections logged Friday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Friday's case numbers were approximately 10,000 cases higher than the previously recorded single-day high on July 16. In total the U.S. has reported 8.58 million infections. This month alone, 29 states have set records for increases in new cases, including five states considered key in the presidential election: Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Coverage from across the political spectrum reported on the record numbers and analyzed the numbers overall and in each region. Some right-rated outlets focused on the rise in cases in cities with Democratic leaders, such as New York; some left-rated outlets tended to frame other news such as Mike Pence aides' positive virus tests and Trump's perceived recent shift in campaign rhetoric, in the context of the U.S.' record-breaking numbers.
