(CNN)Less than three months since the first known coronavirus death in the US, the country's reported fatalities make up more than a quarter of the world's known Covid-19 death toll.
Nearly 52,000 Americans have died of the virus so far -- a number that increases daily as a result of new fatalities and states reviewing previous deaths that had not been tied to the disease.

More than 50,000 Americans have been killed by the coronavirus, according to data posted online by Johns Hopkins University on Friday.
Of the 50,031 victims, nearly one-third — 16,388 — died in New York City, the statistics show.
The national death toll is five times the milestone of 10,000 hit less than three weeks ago and puts COVID-19 on track to soon kill more than the 58,000 Americans who died during the Vietnam War.

The U.S. passed 50,000 coronavirus deaths on Friday and is closing in on nearly 1 million infections as several states around the nation begin implementing plans for reopening businesses and easing social distancing.
On Friday the Johns Hopkins coronavirus database listed 51,017 U.S. deaths and more than 890,000 infections. Due to a lack of testing, the actual number of infections is likely to be much higher.
