Biden Names Climate Change Cabinet Team

President-elect Joe Biden announced his picks to lead his administration's climate response on Thursday, tapping former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm for energy secretary and former Environmental Protection Agency chief Gina McCarthy as leader of domestic climate efforts. Biden also selected North Carolina regulator Michael S. Regan to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland for interior secretary. Brenda Mallory will also serve as chair of the Council on Environmental Equality. The nominees, along with newly nominated transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, will be part of an effort to develop technology to shift the nation's transportation and power grid systems from fossil fuels to clean energy such as wind and solar. Biden on Thursday called his team "bold thinkers” who “know how to pull every lever of government to take on the urgent, existential threat of climate change.” Left- and center-rated outlets tended to focus on the goal of the Biden's climate response, as well as the diversity that the nominees could add to Biden's Cabinet. Some right-rated outlets pointed out that while Biden hailed his nominees as "bold new thinkers," the fact that some of his picks previously served the Obama administration suggest otherwise.
