HR 1 Passes House

Voting Rights And Voter Fraud,For The People Act,Elections

From the Center

“House Democrats passed sweeping voting and ethics legislation over unanimous Republican opposition… House Resolution 1, which touches on virtually every aspect of the electoral process, was approved Wednesday night on a near party-line 220-210 vote.” (AP News)

Highlights of the bill:

Expands voter registration (e.g., automatic and same-day registration) and voting access (e.g., vote-by-mail and early voting). It also limits removing voters from voter rolls

Requires states to establish independent redistricting commissions to carry out congressional redistricting

Addresses campaign finance, including by expanding the prohibition on campaign spending by foreign nationals, requiring additional disclosure of campaign-related fundraising and spending, requiring additional disclaimers regarding certain political advertising, and establishing an alternative [public matching] campaign funding system for certain federal offices

The right opposes the bill, arguing that it would create incentives for fraud.

The left supports the bill, arguing that it would strengthen democracy by making it easier for people to vote.
