In late July, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell kept the central bank's options wide open for its next meeting, and said the Fed would "watch and learn" about the effect of tariffs on the economy.

Minutes of that meeting, released Wednesday, showed broad support for holding rates. They also suggested officials were divided over when they could be confident that higher import costs wouldn’t lead to a period of broader, rolling price hikes.
