The House of Representatives voted 314-117 in favor of a deal to suspend the debt ceiling and cut spending Wednesday night in a bipartisan vote.

There’s progress on the debt limit. There’s no progress. Conservatives have revolted. Liberal Democrats are angry. Negotiators actually ate a meal together. That’s a good sign. No it isn’t. Who’s up? Who’s down?

While working in Congress from 2011 through February 2015 for a member who was part of the founding of the House Freedom Caucus, I saw firsthand the need for leadership beyond over-stated positions and the stalemates they create.

As long as members of his caucus disregard pragmatism, McCarthy's path forward will be precarious.
