Mass Kidnappings, Covid Contingencies, ICE Controversies: Stories You May Have Missed

AllSides analyzed under-covered and omitted stories across the political spectrum this week. Here’s what you may have missed:

What the Right Missed

‘White Supremacist’ Patriot Front Group ‘Rapidly Expanding’

What’s The Story? The radical Patriot Front group “is rapidly expanding,” according to a USA Today (Lean Left bias) exclusive. Leaked internal documents reportedly list over 540 members and dozens of affiliate groups “where young White supremacists are known to train in mixed martial arts and congregate.” USA Today said the group “publicly eschews violence” but also cited instances of criminal charges from its events. It called the expansion a “coordinated recruitment push fueled by step-by-step manuals and a network of fight clubs.” The outlet markedly labelled Patriot Front as a “White supremacist” group and said, “While the word ‘White’ doesn’t appear in the manifesto, the leaked messages, along with years of research on [several members] of the group have led experts across the board to establish Patriot Front’s true goals.”

Why The Miss? Patriot Front touts a national, undemocratic republic as the “ideal structure” of government, deviating from the current US political spectrum on many issues. However, because the group is most closely related to dark-red conservatism, covering its controversial actions would serve as a sticking point for media on the right.

Migrant’s Death Ruled Homicide After ICE Release

What’s The Story? A medical examiner ruled a Haitian migrant’s death a homicide on Friday. Daphy Michel, 31, died from hypothermia at a bus shelter in Pennsylvania in early March, three days after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released her from custody. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said Michel “suffer[ed] from untreated severe mental health issues and a significant language barrier.” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Lauren Bis refuted any indication that ICE caused her death.

Acting ICE Director David Venturella removed a Biden-era requirement for the agency to report inmates’ deaths within 30 days of release earlier in June, according to a Washington Post (Lean Left bias) exclusive. The outlet reported that the 2025 death toll among ICE inmates was the highest in two decades. It quoted an unnamed DHS spokesperson who said ICE should not be responsible for post-release deaths, but it also noted the 2021 case of Vargas Arellano. Arellano was brain-dead and comatose when ICE released him from custody, and thus not counted in the agency’s death toll.

Why The Miss? The Washington Post said one DHS report called the shift “a missed opportunity to improve the care provided and reduce liability.” This rollback on checks and balances, coupled with an emotive appeal towards Michel, caused most outlets on the right to steer clear from coverage, even though the homicide ruling does not prove ICE’s responsibility.

What the Left Missed

Suspect at Large After Evading ICE Arrest

What’s The Story? A New Jersey suspect remains at large after hitting an ICE officer with a vehicle and evading arrest, according to the Stafford Township Police Department (STPD). STPD is leading the investigation, and the state’s Immigrant Trust Directive “limits the types of voluntary assistance [the department] may provide to federal immigration authorities,” despite the ICE agent’s initial involvement.

Why The Miss? In contrast to the aforementioned Pennsylvania case dodged by media on the right, media on the left often avoid or soften stories about migrant crime and violence against authority. Furthermore, while polls show that immigration is conservatives’ number one priority in June, it is not even among the top five for liberals.

What’s The Story? COVID-19 vaccines could increase cancer risk and severity, according to multiple doctors’ testimonies earlier this month. Dr. Angus Dalgleish from the University of London, for example, said, “I have no doubt in my mind that the mRNA vaccine likely played a significant role in the development [of] unexpected cancers.” Dr. Wafik El-Deiry from Brown University said a protein found in both the virus itself and the vaccination could inhibit the body’s ability to fight cancer growth.

Why The Miss? The Epoch Times (Lean Right bias) highlighted officials’ push for public transparency on all potential risks pending further and definitive research. However, because the doctors’ suggestions cannot concretely prove COVID-19 vaccines cause or worsen cancer, news outlets on the left likely dodged this story to avoid promoting vaccine skepticism – a narrative most prominent on the right with the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement.

What Everyone Missed

Nearly 100 More Schoolchildren Kidnapped in Nigeria

What’s The Story? Terrorists kidnapped nearly 100 children from multiple schools in Nigeria on May 15th. Authorities suspect that Boko Haram, a recognized terrorist group known for its violence against Christians, is responsible for the attacks. Media across the political spectrum largely ignored this story, as they have many of the same nature in recent years.

Why The Miss? Washington Examiner (Lean Right bias) opinion writer Sarri Singer compared Americans’ responses to systemic violence in Nigeria and Gaza. She wrote of the attacks in Nigeria, “There is no ambiguity here, no debate over ‘context’ or ‘competing narratives.’ It is oppression and terrorism, pure and simple,” unlike the controversies about affairs in Gaza. She criticized, “Where are the activists who claim to care about human rights? Where are the influencers posting every hour, the students occupying campuses demanding action? Where are those same people who scream for the children of Gaza but are stone-cold silent for the children of Nigeria?... Sadly, the world’s outrage has become deeply selective, shaped less by concern for victims than by biased media narratives and political agendas.”

Bots Reportedly Outnumbering Humans on the Web

What’s The Story? Robots are beginning to outnumber humans on the internet over a year ahead of the predicted timeline, according to recent Cloudflare data. The data, as of June 17th, showed automated bots utilizing 57.3% of HTML web traffic in comparison to human HTTP requests utilizing 42.7%. Humans remained ahead of all content utilization at 64.7%, though that number appears to be gradually shrinking.

Why The Miss? Though this story does not cater to any particular political bias, it may contribute to the continuously depleting trust in media if given a spotlight. Public confidence in mainstream media reached historic lows in 2025, according to a Gallup (Center bias) poll. US adults who have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust dropped from 31% in 2024 to 28% in 2025 – 51% of Democrats, 27% of Independents, and just 8% of Republicans.
