Georgia to Hand Count Election Ballots

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Republican-led Georgia State Election Board voted to hand count ballots on election day in what some on the left call election interference, and the right calls election integrity measures.

For Context: Georgia isn't the only state making last-minute changes to the election rules. North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska are among those making changes to election rules.

From the Right: The Federalist (Right bias) argues many of the new rules proposed by the Georgia board reaffirm laws already in place including "ballot reconciliation, investigation, observation, and thus a 'reasonable inquiry.'" It says that the laws do not give election officials more power, rather the clarity allows officials to certify results confidently and without hesitation.

From the Left: The left generally argues the new rules will delay results and add confusion to the process, giving the pro-Trump officials more power to deny the results. They also note that hand counting votes is less accurate than using voting machines.

Key Quote: Georgia State Election Board member Sara Tindall Ghazal opposed the measures, saying, "One of the arguments that my fellow board members made was, 'Well, why are you sacrificing accuracy for speed?' That is a policy choice that the Legislature made three years ago when they passed the laws, that had very strict reporting deadlines, which are now at risk of being violated."

Analysis

The left seems to have no moral qualms about gaslighting as a political strategy, so the Democrat-led campaign falsely accusing Georgia State Election Board members of interfering with the state’s law on certification is unsurprising. But the left’s misleading narrative around certification doesn’t just place Republican election officials in an unfair light, it could also undermine well-established Georgia election law and disrupt another presidential election.

Analysis

With just weeks to go before the November 5 presidential vote, the pro-Trump majority on Georgia’s State Election Board voted 3-2 on Friday to require ballots to be hand-counted, potentially delaying results and sowing chaos on election night in the swing state. Voting rights advocates say hand-counting ballots is more time-consuming and could also introduce errors compared to the use of standard voting machines. “This adds, at really the 11th hour, another layer of confusion,” says election law attorney Sara Tindall Ghazal, the lone Democrat on the Georgia State Election...
