Summary from the AllSides News Team
The US and Ukraine have reportedly agreed to make changes to the recent Trump administration-drafted peace plan for Ukraine after a meeting in Switzerland on Sunday.
The Details: Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with a Ukrainian delegation in Geneva. It was not made public how the plan would be amended, but after the meeting, Rubio said, "We had a very good day today. I think we made a tremendous amount of progress." He added that the plan "began almost three weeks ago with a foundational document" that was presented to both sides for input and that "there are a couple of issues that we need to continue to work on."
For Context: The plan, which would include freezing the line of combat, territorial concessions, American security guarantees, and a demilitarized zone, first came to light on November 19, when several mainstream outlets reported its existence. On November 20, the full 28-point plan surfaced online. On November 21, The Wall Street Journal (Center bias) reported speaking to "a senior US official" who said after the draft surfaced, Ukraine removed a clause that would audit the country for international aid it has received to date in favor of "full amnesty" for actions of all involved parties "during the war." Also on Sunday, the European Union offered its own 28-point peace plan for Ukraine.
How The Media Covered It: The Washington Post (Lean Left) framed the plan as one that "appeased Russia" and "would further destabilize global security by rewarding Russia after its 2022 invasion." It prominently wrote that Rubio "sought to downplay widespread claims that the plan was originally written by the Russian side." Fox News (Right) prominently noted positive comments from Rubio and centered its coverage only on Rubio's remarks after the meeting.
