Ukraine Strikes Deep Into Russia With One of Its Deadliest Attacks Yet

Ukraine struck deep into Russia on Monday, killing 13 and wounding 75 others. The attack is one of the deadliest on Russian soil since the conflict began in 2022.

The Details: Ukrainian drones struck Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan, which lies about 550 miles east of Moscow, north of western Kazakhstan. Kremlin-funded RT (Lean Right bias) highlighted that Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belyaev said "both industrial and civilian sites" were hit. Outlets across the spectrum noted that a child was among the dead. RT also noted that Tatarstan said Uzbek and Tajik nationals may be among the dead.

Moscow said it shot down 456 drones, though it didn't say how many hit their targets. Associated Press (Lean Left) reported that Russia didn't say which sites were targeted but noted the city is a key oil-refining hub. Yulia Shapovalova of Al Jazeera (Lean Left) said Kyiv struck "the exact same industrial zone" in June and July. According to Ukraine, on Monday, a Russian strike killed five people in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

For Context: Ukraine's large strike comes as some mainstream commentators have suggested it may finally be gaining the upper hand in the conflict. In recent months, pro-Ukrainian organizations have tried to influence the American right, financing press trips to the country. In late July, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the US to attend Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R-SC) funeral and meet with President Trump. While Zelenskyy was there, the Senate passed sweeping new sanctions against Russia in Graham's honor.

Dueling Narratives: RT wrote, "Last month, Kiev stepped up attacks on Russian energy facilities, civilian shipping and other key infrastructure as part of what Vladimir Zelensky called a 40-day 'pressure campaign' aimed at forcing Moscow to accept Ukraine's terms for a ceasefire." The Kyiv Independent (Center) wrote, "Ukraine regularly strikes military infrastructure deep within Russia and the occupied territories in an effort to diminish Moscow's ability to continue waging its war."
