Laura Loomer Pivots on Ukraine After Press Trip to the Country

American influencer Laura Loomer (Right bias) has flipped her position on Ukraine after a trip to the country paid for by "private donors" and "100% all-American money."

The Details: Loomer traveled to Ukraine last week and sat for a 43-minute interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She said she didn't decide to interview Zelenskyy until she was already there. Loomer said she spoke with President Trump after her meeting with Zelenskyy and anticipates another meeting with him soon. She wrote on X, "I feel like such an a**hole for minimizing the struggle of Ukrainians for the last 5 years… There are people in Ukraine who have to run to a bomb shelter everyday and some of us had the audacity to say Russia wasn't wrong because we believed the lie that Ukraine is a country full of Nazi sympathizers. We have been so propagandized by Russia and we don't even realize it."

'Axis of Evil': Loomer, who is very pro-Israel and has consistently called for military escalation against Iran, also wrote in the post, "We won't have Trump forever and the axis of evil is moving fast." In May, when pushing for deeper military cooperation with Israel, Ukraine's ambassador to Israel also described Russia and Iran as part of the "same axis of evil." 

'America First': Loomer told The Wall Street Journal (Center) that she believes her pivot to support Ukraine is "America First." Last month, Robby Soave (Lean Right), who hosts The Hill's (Center) news program Rising, revealed he also quietly traveled to Ukraine and flipped his view on the conflict. Soave said his trip was paid for by a "pro-Ukrainian organization that brought a group of journalists to the country to meet with political, religious, and military leaders." Soave concluded by framing the Russia-Ukraine conflict as an East versus West fight and said Ukraine is on the side of "America First."

For Context: On Saturday, Ukraine struck an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea that Zelenskyy claimed was transporting military cargo, and Iran vowed to retaliate. On Tuesday, Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are both expected to meet with Trump in Washington after attending the funeral of Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC).

How The Media Covered It: Loomer's pivot was covered significantly across the spectrum and particularly widely by the left. Most notably, Loomer spoke exclusively to both The Journal and Associated Press (Lean Left). The Journal opened by saying Loomer has "for years… parroted Russian talking points," and AP opened by calling her "infamous for spreading conspiracy theories online." An analysis from Washington Examiner (Lean Right) described Loomer as very influential on President Trump and said she could "deepen Trump's shift" on support for Ukraine. Glenn Greenwald (Center)raised a similar point on X. The Independent (Lean Left)framed Loomer's flip as having "sparked confusion and suspicion in the United States." CNN (Lean Left) published TV coverage on YouTube in which it said analysts were "stunned" at her reversal.
