Former FBI Director and Special Counsel Robert Mueller Passes Away

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Former FBI Director and Special Counsel Robert Mueller passed away on Friday night at the age of 81 after a reported battle with Parkinson's disease.

The Details: Mueller led the FBI for 12 years in the Bush and Obama administrations. He was the second-longest-serving FBI director in history. Then, in 2017, he was appointed by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein as Special Counsel to probe President Donald Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The resulting report neither implicated or cleared the president of obstructing justice and it found no conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Key Quotes: On Truth Social, Trump posted, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!" Posting on X, Former President Barack Obama remembered Mueller as "one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI."

For Context: Mueller's probe resulted in a series of criminal cases against Trump and his associates, including former national security advisor Michael Flynn and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The charges have since earned Muller the anger of President Trump.

How the Media Covered It: Sources across the political spectrum noted that Trump said he was "glad" about Mueller's passing, though CNN (Lean Left bias) reported that Fox News (Right) never mentioned Trump's comment on their broadcast. The Washington Examiner (Lean Right) noted that Mueller's bipartisan support evaporated due to the Russia probe, with many Republicans calling it a "witch hunt." CNBC (Lean Left) noted that Mueller remained quiet during those attacks, making no public appearances and holding no news conferences.
