US Shoots Down Iranian Drone Over Arabian Sea

The US on Tuesday shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea and Iranian gun boats attempted to stop a US tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Drone: A Shahed-139 drone "aggressively" approached the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, "with unclear intent." The drone was destroyed by an F-35C fighter jet launched from the carrier in an act of self-defense, according to a military Central Command spokesman.

US Tanker: Six Iranian gunboats armed with .50-caliber machine guns approached a US-flagged ship, ordering it to shut down its engines, stop, and prepare to be boarded, according to the Wall Street Journal (Center bias). The ship did the opposite, accelerating away from the threat and was later escorted to safety by a US warship.

Planned Nuclear Talks: President Donald Trump last week announced that "a massive Armada is heading to Iran" and threatened to attack the country if it does not reach a "fair and equitable deal" with the US. Planned nuclear talks between Iran and the US were set to take place in Turkey on Friday, but Iranian officials on Tuesday threatened to withdraw from the meeting, amidst Trump warning that "bad things" could happen if diplomacy fails. At this point, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the upcoming talks remain scheduled.

How The Media Covered It: Some outlets on the left and center, like the Associated Press (Left) and NewsNation (Center), highlighted Iran's ongoing violent unrest. Outlets on the right, like Fox News (Right) and the Washington Free Beacon (Right), did not, and instead focused on the details of the incidents Tuesday and Trump's warnings to Iran.
