Israeli Forces Raid Gaza's Largest Hospital Again

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Israeli forces once again raided Gaza City's al-Shifa hospital based on intelligence that senior Hamas members had regrouped there and fired attacks from within.

The Details: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had killed 20 gunmen in the “high precision operation,” during which it told residents in the area to evacuate. Palestinian officials said the attack caused multiple casualties and set off a fire in one of the buildings. Tens of thousands of civilians are reportedly taking shelter within the hospital complex, including patients, medical staff, and refugees.

How the Media Covered It: Coverage was common on Monday, continuing a trend in which left-rated outlets were more likely to highlight humanitarian concerns. For instance, Semafor (Lean Left bias) highlighted fears of “imminent” famine in northern Gaza, and BBC News (Center bias) quoted a Palestinian doctor at the hospital. Headlines from the right were more likely to include Israel’s suspicion of Hamas activity at the hospital, although coverage across the spectrum used the word “claimed” to describe Israeli statements on the issue — language sometimes used by the media to withhold belief in a quote. Israel launched another raid on Gaza’s largest hospital Monday, claiming Hamas had regrouped there and killing a senior terror official during a shoot-out.

Faiq Mabhouh, the head of operations for Hamas’ internal security force, had allegedly been hiding inside the al Shifa hospital complex in Gaza City and “was working to advance terror activity” when he was taken out, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Some of the tens of thousands of people sheltering in the hospital said the Israeli soldiers, backed by tanks and artillery, surrounded the medical complex. Israel said its forces were met by sniper fire coming from inside.
