Israeli Forces Raid and Shut Down Al Jazeera’s West Bank Office

Israeli forces raided Al Jazeera’s (Lean Left bias) office in the West Bank on Sunday, confiscating the network’s equipment, and shutting it down for an initial period of 45 days.

The Details: Israeli soldiers entered the building during a live broadcast and handed a closure order over to the Al Jazeera West Bank bureau chief, Walid al-Omari, who read it out live on air.

For Context: In May, Israeli cabinet officials voted unanimously to suspend Al Jazeera’s Israel operations. The broadcaster, which is funded partially by the Qatari state, has been criticized by Israeli officials and pro-Israel voices for being sympathetic to Hamas and the Palestinian cause. Al Jazeera condemned the move and "unfounded allegations presented by Israeli authorities to justify these illegal raids", which it described as an "affront" to press freedom.

How The Media Covered It: Media across the spectrum noted Al Jazeera’s pushback against the closure and that Israeli forces have killed Al Jazeera journalists previously. Al Jazeera cited that Gaza’s Government Media Office claims Israeli forces have killed 173 journalists since the start of the war on October 7, 2023. BBC News (Center bias) and ZeroHedge (Lean Right bias) wrote that Al Jazeera journalists have been some of the only ones who have been able to cover the Gaza conflict on the ground. ZeroHedge noted an incident from 2022 in which Israeli police “attacked” a funeral procession for an Al Jazeera journalist who was shot dead while reporting.
