Israel and Hamas Reportedly Launch Attacks in Gaza

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a series of strikes in Gaza on Sunday, in response to alleged Hamas attacks that violated the groups’ ceasefire agreement.

The Details: The Hamas attacks, which the US State Department deemed “credible” on Saturday, killed two IDF soldiers and severely injured another. The responding IDF attack killed at least 18 people in the Rafah area, and Israel also briefly halted its humanitarian aid. After the attacks, both Israel and Hamas reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire.

For Context: Israel and Hamas agreed to the ceasefire in early October, as part of President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan. As part of the agreement, Hamas agreed to release all living and deceased Israeli hostages; however, 16 deceased hostages remained unreleased as of Saturday. Since the ceasefire began, Hamas has carried out multiple public executions in Gaza, while the IDF has reportedly killed several people as well.

Key Quotes: While Hamas claimed, “We have no connection to any events occurring in those areas, nor can we communicate with any of our fighters there if any of them remain alive,” IDF stated, “These terrorist actions constitute a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, and the IDF will respond firmly.” The group later asserted a “renewed enforcement of the ceasefire,” provided that no further violations are imposed. The US State Department said on Saturday, “[Hamas’] planned attack against Palestinian civilians would constitute a direct and grave violation of the ceasefire agreement and undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts… Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire.”

How The Media Covered It: Word choice, when referring to Hamas, differed across the political spectrum. USA Today (Lean Left) called Hamas “militants.” The Wall Street Journal (Center) more neutrally called the group a “[US]-designated terrorist organization.” And Fox News (Right) used the term “terrorist organization.” Media on the left framed the Israeli strike more prominently than media on the right as a “test” of the ongoing ceasefire. The Wall Street Journal highlighted that “Hamas said the Israeli response in one case left two families, including several children, dead as they were hit by tank fire while trying to return home.” The outlet mentioned Hamas’ “violent crackdown on its rivals in Gaza since Israeli forces retreated,” but Fox News more blatantly stated, “According to Reuters, Hamas executed at least 33 people in recent days in what officials described as a campaign to ‘show strength’ after the ceasefire.”
