Iran Blames Trump for Protest Deaths, Western Media Frames Statement as Admission of Guilt
Summary from the AllSides News Team
Split narratives have continued regarding the death toll and other details from the protests in Iran, with the Iranian government blaming President Trump for the deaths and several Western media outlets framing the Iranian state as responsible.
Iran's View: On January 17, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, "We hold the American president guilty for the casualties, damages and accusations he has leveled against the Iranian nation. This was an American conspiracy. America's goal is to swallow Iran... the goal is to put Iran back under military, political and economic domination." On the same day, Trump called for "new leadership" in Iran. On January 18, Reuters (Center bias) reported speaking to an unnamed Iranian official who said authorities verified at least 5,000 deaths, including 500 security personnel killed by "terrorists and armed rioters."
Western Media: The Times of London (Center) reported on January 17 that, according to doctors on the ground, at least 16,500 protestors had died. The Times and many other Western media outlets, such as NPR (Lean Left), BBC News (Center), and Fox News (Right), framed the Iranian government as responsible for the deaths, writing that Khamenei had "admitted" or "acknowledged" thousands were killed. Fox News also highlighted the ayatollah's blaming of Trump and The Times' report under separate headlines. Previously, on January 13, CBS News (Lean Left) reported that, according to one source inside Iran, the death toll could be up to 20,000.
Another Split Narrative: Many Western media outlets have noted difficulties in reporting accurately from Iran since the government shut down the internet. Split reports emerged from Qatari outlet Al Jazeera (Lean Left) and Israeli outlet The Times of Israel (Center) on January 17. Al Jazeera published a report titled "Iran restores SMS as phased rollback of internet blackout begins." The Times of Israel published a report titled "Iranian regime plans to permanently cut people off from internet β watchdog."

'You have ten minutes to cry," came the officer's curt command to the couple as he revealed the corpse of their twentysomething daughter, gunned down in the historic streets of Isfahan.
After searching morgues and hospitals for days when she didn't come home from the demonstrations, they paid 700 million tomans (Β£3,700) in so-called "bullet money" demanded by the security forces and were driven five hours to another town where her body had been thrown into an old grave.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday lashed out at President Donald Trump, labeling him a "criminal" and accusing the U.S. of orchestrating unrest that has erupted into the deadliest protests in decades.
"The latest anti-Iran sedition was different in that the U.S. President personally became involved," Iranian media quoted Khamenei as saying, per Reuters.
The statement is the latest Iranian government rhetoric blaming the U.S. for contributing to instability in Iran, with Tehran singling out Trump as a central figure in what it calls foreign-driven unrest. The regime...
