Both Israel and Lebanon Claim Ceasefire Violations

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday came into question after Israel and Hezbollah accused each other of violating the terms of the ceasefire agreement, after which Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon.

The Details: Less than two days after reaching a ceasefire agreement, IDF forces reported striking a Hezbollah medium-range rocket facility Thursday following identification of activity on the premises. IDF forces also carried out a second strike against two Hezbollah operatives who reportedly entered a known site for rocket attacks and fired several warning shots at people approaching the border areas deemed off-limits in the ceasefire agreement. Lebanese sources also have reported IDF shelling other border villages, killing at least two, claiming all of these are violations of the agreement.

For Context: The IDF is operating in Southern Lebanon and actively enforcing any violations of the ceasefire terms according to the Israeli military. They have also enforced nightly curfews for any residents still living or returning to the areas along the border. Lebanese military personnel have also been moving into southern regions along the border but have refrained from entering areas where IDF are still present.

How the Media Covered It: Some outlets like Al Jazeera (Lean Left bias) focused more on the humanitarian issues over displacement of residents as well as commentary from a reporter who claims Israel, under terms of the ceasefire, does not possess the right to enforce the terms. Several left and right outlets also mentioned Biden’s urging on Tuesday for Israel and Lebanon to agree to stop the fighting, however, sources on the right like Fox News (Right bias) tended to focus on criticisms from Republican lawmakers who believe Biden should not have pushed this temporary ceasefire as he did.
