Was Kamala Harris a "DEI" Hire?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Many on the right have called Vice President Kamala Harris a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) hire. Those on the left often view that framing as offensive.

For Context: In 2019, President Joe Biden said of his VP pick, “Whomever I pick, preferably it will be someone who was of color and/or a different gender, but I’m not making that commitment until I know that the person I’m dealing with I can completely and thoroughly trust as authentic and on the same page.”

From the Right: "As for Harris, if she or anyone else has a problem with her being associated with DEI, they should take it up with President Joe Biden himself," said a writer for Washington Examiner (Lean Right). "This is the heart of DEI — choosing people because of their race, ethnicity, or sex, and thinking that we are a tribal nation in which we should identify with 'people who look like us' rather than any of our compatriots, no matter their national origin or sex."

From the Left: "Gasparino’s use of 'DEI hire' apparently to demean the achievements of a person of color is far from the first time we’ve seen this," said CNN Opinion (Left bias) columnist Dean Obeidallah. For the New York Times Opinion (Left bias), columnist Lydia Polgreen argued that if Kamala Harris is a DEI hire, so is J.D. Vance. "All politics is, at some level, identity politics... Vance’s entire business and political career has flowed from his life story, which is embedded in identities he did not choose."

Analysis

Republicans are warning their colleagues to back off using diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) politics to attack Vice President Harris as she launches her presidential bid.

The GOP has had to quickly revamp its attacks in the days since President Biden withdrew from the 2024 race and Democrats coalesced around Harris as his replacement — and some members have taken swipes over her race and gender in arguing she is unqualified.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) called Harris a “DEI hire.” Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) similarly told local media that Democrats will elevate her to replace Biden...

Yes, Kamala is a DEI hire. Shouldn’t the Left be happy about that?
Opinion

The Left gets in high dudgeon every time someone calls Vice President Kamala Harris a diversity, equity, and inclusion hire. Joe Scarborough, whose morning show on MSNBC sets the agenda for the wokeati, railed that it was racist — right before his guest, Katty Kay, called former President Donald Trump “old, white, and male.”

But none of these truths should offend supporters of either candidate.

Trump is 78, white, and famously male.

As for Harris, if she or anyone else has a problem with her being associated with DEI, they should take it up with President...

Calling Kamala Harris a ‘DEI hire’ is what bigotry looks like

“America may soon be subjected to the country’s first DEI president: Kamala Harris,” screamed the headline of an op-ed in The New York Post on Saturday penned by Fox Business senior correspondent Charles Gasparino.

The longtime media figure began his article by slamming Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs as “literally destroying businesses.” Gasparino then took aim at the vice president, writing that “the American public may soon be subjected to DEI writ large in the next president of the United States, if Kamala Harris finds her way to the top of the Democratic...
