The U.S. will join the U.K. and E.U. in imposing economic sanctions directly on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and “members of the Russian national security team,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday.
The sanctions will include at least banning Putin and Lavrov from traveling to the U.S., Psaki said. The U.K. and E.U. sanctions included freezing the Russian leaders’ assets in European and British banks. Psaki’s announcement came as commentators in the West debated whether Thursday’s sanctions went far enough. Many wondered on Friday if the U.S. would try to kick Russia out of SWIFT, the worldwide financial translation system. Many also called for removing Russia from its permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council. On Friday, Russia used its Security Council veto to block a draft resolution deploring its invasion of Ukraine; India, China and the U.A.E. abstained, and the other 11 council members voted in favor.

The Biden administration said it will follow in the footsteps of the European Union and impose sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin over his decision to send troops into Ukraine.
“Following a telephone conversation President Biden held with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and in alignment with the decision by our European allies, the United States will join them in sanctioning President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov and members of the Russian national security team,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.
