Progressive Abdul El-Sayed Wins Tight Michigan Democratic Senate Primary

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic Senate Primary in Michigan on Tuesday, beating Rep. Haley Stevens, who reportedly spent eight times as much as El-Sayed on her campaign.

The Details: Associated Press (Lean Left bias) declared El-Sayed the winner with a lead of 14,893 votes, a margin of just under 1 percentage point. El-Sayed is a progressive candidate backed by left-wing politicians such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, though he has not labeled himself a "Democratic Socialist." Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer backed the more centrist Stevens.

What It Means for Democrats: BBC (Center) wrote that El-Sayed's victory sent "tremors" through the Democratic party, as the win marked a split between the progressive, pro-Palestine candidate and the establishment-backed candidate who is more supportive of Israel. BBC reported that El-Sayed did well with higher-educated liberals but will need to win over low-income and rural voters who backed Stevens. Washington Post (Lean Left) noted that his win "accelerates an ideological fight" within the Democratic Party and included El-Sayed's statement, "We have an opportunity right now to remember what it is that we're up against. We're up against a historically corrupt president. … We're up against a movement to squash democracy itself, and whatever we may differ on, it is so much smaller than what we agree on.

Who Funded El-Sayed's Campaign? Fox News (Right) reported that El-Sayed's campaign accepted at least $115,000 in donations from individuals who have worked for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which the United Arab Emirates has designated as a terrorist organization. One of the donors was El-Sayed's father-in-law, who is a board member of CAIR-Michigan. Fox included that CAIR has never been charged with a crime and has repeatedly condemned antisemitism, including the Hamas attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
