Abortion Becomes 2nd Most Important Issue to Voters: Newsweek Poll

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Heading into the 2024 election, the economy has been the top issue, and abortion has recently overtaken immigration as the second most important issue, according to Newsweek (Center bias)

For Context: Vice President Kamala Harris has made abortion a key issue in her campaign and will make her case to women in Texas later this week. Abortion is on the ballot in 10 states this November. According to the New York Times (Lean Left), abortion has risen, even in states with restrictions.

More Abortion News: Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, infant mortality has risen nationwide. A study "tallied 247 additional infant deaths in the 1½ years after Dobbs, which amounted to a 7% increase. The vast majority of those deaths — 204 — were due to congenital anomalies, an increase of 10%, according to the study." The researchers' theory is that many women who would have had abortions if congenital anomalies occurred, were more likely to carry on with pregnancies that ended in the child's death after birth when abortion restrictions emerged.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets across the political spectrum have covered voters' rise in interest in abortion. Outlets on the left were more likely to highlight high infant mortality and Harris' appeals to pro-choice voters. On the right, outlets sometimes covered infant mortality, but were more likely to focus on addressing alleged misinformation from pro-choice advocates during the election cycle. For example, while the left has covered deaths and arrests they see as related to restrictive abortion laws, the right has responded with clarifications about the laws, arguing that outlets on the left are misrepresenting the cases. Some on the right have used different polls to show that abortion is not a top concern for voters.

Opinion

If there is one thing we have learned from Republicans during this election, it is that they would like the issue of abortion to disappear.

Donald Trump, who only eight years ago called for “some kind of punishment” to be meted out to women who procured abortions, now speaks of “reproductive rights,” a formulation preferred by proponents of legal abortion. References to abortion have been all but eliminated from the party’s platform. Even JD Vance, whose opposition to abortion is perhaps his most firmly established political position, now says that...

Abortion won’t be the winning issue in 2024
Opinion

Vice President Kamala Harris and down-ticket Democrats may have overplayed their hand on abortion by making it the primary focus of their campaigns this election.

A close look at recent election results and public polling reveals that, while Democrats have an advantage on the topic of abortion, it is not likely to prove determinative, and their focus on it may harm them with voters worried about immigration, inflation, and other major concerns facing the nation.

“Democrats are kind of like a degenerate gambler going back and back and back to the same slot machine that...

News

Abortion has overtaken immigration to become the second most important issue for voters heading into the 2024 election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Newsweek polling suggests.

Over the past 16 months, a series of polls conducted byRedfield & Wilton Strategies ahead of the November 5 election asked participants: "Which issues are most likely to determine how you vote in the November 2024 Presidential Election? You may select up to three."

Only four issues out of 24 were repeatedly selected by more than two in five respondents: the economy, abortion, immigration and healthcare.

The economy...
