Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said Tuesday the city will file a lawsuit that seeks to close Delaney Hall immigration detention facility over health and safety concerns.
The facility has been at the center of advocates protesting over claims that detainees are being housed in poor living conditions without adequate medical care. However, demonstrations have led to clashes with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Baraka said protests "started to spiral" into violence and prompted the city to impose a curfew. He said he hopes to lift the curfew as early as Tuesday or Wednesday night.
