Famine officially declared in Sudan

Sudan’s brutal civil war has pushed parts of the country into famine, marking the world’s most severe hunger crisis for seven years, according to an independent panel of experts.

The ruling that Sudan’s deepening hunger crisis meets the technical definition of a famine is the first time such conditions have been formally declared worldwide since 2017.

Analysis by the Famine Review Committee (FRC) of experts found the 15-month long war had pushed parts of north Darfur, particularly the Zamzam camp near the besieged town of El Fasher, into famine conditions.
