The White House cautioned that talks with Russia on potential prisoner swaps for jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich hadn’t yet yielded “a pathway to a resolution,” marking 100 days since his detention in Russia.
“I do not want to give false hope,” said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan. “I cannot stand here today and tell you that we have a clear answer to how we are going to get Evan home. All I can do is tell you that we have a clear commitment and conviction that we will do everything possible to bring him home.”
The Kremlin said earlier this week that Russia was in touch with the U.S. about prisoner swaps. Sullivan said the U.S. remained focused on the return of Gershkovich and other Americans detained in Russia, including Paul Whelan. The U.S. government has designated both Gershkovich and Whelan as wrongfully detained.
