Previewing Tuesday's Primaries

Summary from the AllSides News Team

On Tuesday, voters in several states will vote in 2024 primary elections.

The Races: Kentucky and Oregon will vote in their state's presidential and congressional primaries. Voters will also head to the polls in Georgia and Idaho, where congressional and local races are being decided. In addition, a special election is being held in California in the Republican primary to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who resigned from Congress late last year.

Presidential Primaries: In Kentucky, voters have the option to vote "uncommitted" against President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, while in Oregon, voters are not given that option but can write in a candidate's name. In previous primaries, some Democratic voters have voted "uncommitted" due to Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

Congressional Primaries:  In Kentucky, Representative Tom Massie is facing two primary challengers after pushing for the ouster of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) earlier this month. In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis faces Christian Wise Smith, and in California, a special election will determine who will finish McCarthy's term.

How the Media Covered it: Some sources on the left noted that despite securing their nominations, Biden and Trump still face dissension from some voters who oppose Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war, and some Republicans are still supporting Trump rival Nikki Haley, who quit the race on March 6.
