Collection of Personal Information

We collect the personal information you or your school provides as necessary to operate our business, to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, and to provide our Services to you. Within the last 12 months, we may have collected the following types of personal information about you:

  • Identifiers. We collect these identifiers if you provide them to us, including your real name, alias, and postal address. When you create an account with us, we may collect your name, email address and account name.
    We collect these certain analytics identifiers automatically when you visit our website (by us or third parties on our site for analytics), including unique personal identifier, online identifier, Internet Protocol address, or other similar identifiers.
  • Statutory Personal Information. If you sign an agreement with us, we may collect your name, signature, address, and telephone number.
    If you are applying for a job with us, we may collect your education, employment, and employment history.
    If you are a customer, you may provide your bank account number, credit card number, debit card number, or other financial information to our payment providers.
  • Protected Classifications. We may collect your protected classification characteristics (such as race or ethnicity) if they are relevant to an online event or if provided by Schools or Educators. For our Mismatch service and AllSides for Schools program, this information may be collected at the classroom level but not collected with respect to individual students.
  • Commercial Records. We may collect commercial information such as records of personal property, products or services purchased, obtained, or considered, or other purchasing or consuming histories or tendencies. In particular, AllSides sells branded merchandise through Redbubble and may receive information about your purchases and transactions.
  • Internet / Networking Activity. We may collect internet or other similar network activity including browsing history (referral URL), search history, information on a consumer’s interaction with a websites, application, or advertisements when we utilize analytics as disclosed in the Privacy Notice.
  • Geolocation. Your IP address may reveal your specific location and, thus, we may collect your geolocation and physical location from your IP address.
  • Professional or Employment Information. We may collect professional or employment information such as current or past job history or performance evaluations if you are applying for a job, requesting a School or Educator membership, or registering for the Mismatch platform.
  • Education Records. We may collect non-public information such as education records directly related to a student maintained by an educational institution or party acting on its behalf, such as grades, transcripts, class lists, student schedules, student identification codes, student financial information, or student disciplinary records as provided by a school to support our services.
  • Inferences. Inferences drawn from other personal information such as a profile reflecting a person's preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes.

Collection of Sensitive Personal Information

We may also collect or process sensitive personal information as necessary to operate our business, to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, and to provide our services to you. We may collect the following types of sensitive personal information from you:

  • We may collect your account log-in, financial account, debit card, or credit card number in combination with any required security or access code, password, or credentials allowing access to an account when you sign up for our services or when you provide your information to our payment providers.
  • We may collect your precise geolocation from your IP address.
  • We may collect your racial or ethnic origin, religious or philosophical beliefs, political leanings, socioeconomic information, age, geographic setting, and other demographic information, if they are relevant to an online event or if provided by a customer. For our Mismatch service and AllSides for Schools program, this information may be collected at the classroom level but not collected with respect to individual students.

We collect and use sensitive personal information for purposes requiring us to collect your sensitive personal information in order to provide our Services to you.

How Personal Information Is Collected

We collect personal information directly from the following sources:

  • Directly from you. For example, when you sign up for the AllSides Services or when you interact with us or others on the Mismatch platform.
  • Indirectly from you. For example, from observing your actions on our websites.
  • From third parties. For example, from analytics providers.
  • From our affiliates and business partners.
  • From data supplementation services.
  • From marketing vendors and advertising networks.
  • From social media.

We may use your information for the following business purposes:

  • To provide our Services.
  • Auditing related to counting ad impressions to unique visitors, verifying positioning and quality of ad impressions, and auditing compliance with this specification and other standards.
  • Helping to ensure security and integrity to the extent the use of the consumer’s personal information is reasonably necessary and proportionate for these purposes.
  • Debugging to identify and repair errors that impair existing intended functionality.
  • Short-term, transient use, including, but not limited to, non-personalized advertising shown as part of a consumer’s current interaction with us.
  • Performing services on behalf of our customers, including maintaining or servicing accounts, providing customer service, processing or fulfilling orders and transactions, verifying customer information, processing payments, providing financing, providing analytic services, providing storage, or providing similar services on behalf of the business.

Your California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, you have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  1. Right to Access. You have the right to access the personal information we have collected about you. If requested, we will provide you with a copy of the personal information we have collected.
  2. Right to Know. You have the right to request that we disclose the following about your personal information in the preceding 12 months:
    1. The categories of personal information we collected;
    2. The categories of sources from which we collected your personal information;
    3. The business or commercial purposes for collecting, selling, or sharing your personal information;
    4. The categories of third parties to whom we disclose your personal information; and
    5. The specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
  3. Right to Delete. You have the right to request that we delete your personal information. Upon verifying your identity and the validity of your request, we will delete your personal information from our records and instruct our service providers, affiliates, or third parties to delete your information as required by law. We may deny your deletion request if retaining the information is permitted under law.
  4. Right to Correct. You have the right to correct inaccurate personal information that we maintain about you. Upon verifying your identity and the validity of your request, we will use reasonable efforts to correct your personal information as directed. In certain circumstances, we may not be able to satisfy this request depending on the nature of the personal information and purposes for maintaining it.
  5. Right to Opt-out of Selling/Sharing. You have the right to direct us to not sell your personal information at any time. To exercise the right to opt out, you may click the “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” link in the footer of our website. Once you make an opt-out request, we will wait at least twelve months before asking you to reauthorize personal information sales. You do not need to create an account with us to exercise your opt out rights. Your right to opt out of ‘sharing’ information is a specific right to prevent the provision of your personal information to a third party for them to target certain advertising to you.

We will record your request. We may not discriminate against you for exercising any of your rights under the California Privacy Rights Act. This means that we may not deny you services, or charge you different prices or rates for services or provide you with a different level or quality of services (or suggest that we will do so), in response to a request made under the California Privacy Rights Act. However, we may charge different prices or rates, or provide a different level or quality of services, where that difference is reasonably related to the value provided to us by your personal information.

You may designate an authorized agent to make a request to know, request to correct, or request to delete. An agent may be an individual or a business entity. To designate an authorized agent, you must provide the agent with written permission to submit the request. We may still require you to verify your identity directly (subject to certain exceptions). We may refuse a request if the agent does not provide adequate proof of their authorization.

How to Exercise These Rights

Please note that we may take steps to verify your identity before granting you access to information or acting on your request to exercise your rights. In connection with such verification, we may ask you to provide your name, email address, physical address or zip code and phone number. We may limit our response to your exercise of the above rights as permitted by law.

Data Storage and Retention

We will store your personal information until the initial purpose for which we collected such data has been satisfied, including the purpose described in our How We Use Information We Collect section. If you consent to a new or additional purpose for retaining your data, your personal information may be stored for longer. We have implemented measures designed to secure your personal information against unauthorized use, loss, destruction or alteration. We cannot guarantee the security of your personal information.

We retain your data according to a set retention schedule, which can be generally described as follows: 

  • For newsletters, data is retained indefinitely given our need to manage records of opt-out and opt-ins.
  • For user account information and information provided by customers processed on their behalf, data is retained for the duration of the relationship and to retain archival records according to our internal policies.
  • User and event data collected by Google Analytics from website visitors is generally retained no more than 14 months. 
  • As necessary to defend legal claims and for other legal purposes.

At the end of that retention period, all data is deleted unless subject to an exception under law. We may retain data in non-identifiable form indefinitely as permitted by law.
