Wagner Leader Prigozhin Reportedly Killed in Plane Crash

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary leader whose brief march toward Moscow was labeled treasonous by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was reportedly killed in a plane crash.

The Details: Prigozhin and ten others were listed on the manifest of a flight that crashed between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Russian authorities said there were no survivors. BBC News (Center bias) cited a Telegram channel claiming the plane was shot down by air defenses north of Moscow.

For Context: Prigozhin’s Wagner mercenary group was key in Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as other military activities in Africa and the Middle East. In June, however, Prigozhin said the Ukraine invasion was a “poorly planned operation” and accused Russian forces of attacking his troops. He then led his mercenaries north to take the city of Rostov-on-Don and march within 200 miles of Moscow.

How the Media Covered It: Coverage first appeared in international outlets like BBC News and the Financial Times (Center bias).
