Did the Media Do Iryna Zarutska Justice?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Initial mainstream media coverage was controversially minimal after a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska, was stabbed to death on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

‘Most Tragic Crimes Aren’t News’: “Random stabbings happen all the time in a country as big as America and they rarely get reported on,” argued Bentham’s Bulldog (Lean Left bias) on SubStack. “People are shot every day which supports the left-wing narrative that we need gun control. People who were let out of jail commit homicides every day, which supports the right-wing narrative that we need tough on crime laws. So once again, the policy cannot be wall-to-wall coverage of every single crime that can seem to fit any political narrative.” The outlet asserted, “It’s a tragic crime, but most tragic crimes aren’t news. If there’s an uptick in crime, that is newsworthy, but random homicides are not.”

‘No Left-Wing Outlet Could Report On It’: Mary Harrington (Lean Right) was critical of media on both the left and right in an opinion for UnHerd (Center). She argued, “no Left-wing outlet could report on it without fearing its weaponisation [sic] by the Right… the video shows an unprovoked and senseless attack on a defenceless [sic] lone white woman by a black man with a knife. Worse still, the victim isn’t even the privileged white woman of progressive demonology, but a refugee.”

‘The Indifference Is Intolerable’: An opinion writer for Washington Examiner (Lean Right) painted a grim picture of the scene, detailing the attack and a bystander “pretending not to see the blood draining from [Zarutska’s] neck.” “The indifference is intolerable,” he wrote, expressing his general disconcertion for US culture. “The slaying disturbs the soul for a million reasons, and its implications are vast for our nation and our politics. I confess that I did not fully understand the true depth of the spiritual desolation of our cities before this moment.

We met Iryna Zarutska’s murder with terrifying indifference
Opinion

Like everyone else, my imagination filled in the missing gap of the original video of Iryna Zarutska’s murder with images from an action film: the killer’s knife, flashing beside his shrouded face, plunges in a frenzied swing.

Next, the nearby passengers leap backward into the windows, shouting in terror but frozen by fear. The sight of the killer striding nonchalantly away down the aisle leaves eyes wide and jaws agape.

But as the world now knows, reality was far more disturbing. The girl, who had fled the war in Ukraine...

Recently, a very tragic video went viral on social media. In it, a Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska was sitting on a train, looking at her phone, when a mentally ill homeless man, Decarlos Brown Jr., stabbed her to death completely unprovoked. She wasn’t aware that anything was the matter until she was stabbed in the neck by a violent murderer who crept up behind her.

It’s a tragic story. A woman was stabbed to death for absolutely no reason. She did nothing to provoke Brown and wasn’t even aware in...

Opinion

A video showing the murder of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on public transport in Charlotte, North Carolina, has sent shockwaves round the world. It has also reignited debate over the widening ideological gulf in news reporting. The video shows Zarutska sitting alone, scrolling her phone, while behind her Decarlos Williams, a 35-year-old black man with a long history of arrest and diagnosed schizophrenia, rises to his feet and swings a knife toward her unsuspecting neck.
