Texas, Missouri Sue Biden, Attempt to Reinstate 'Remain In Mexico' Policy

The state of Texas sued the Biden administration Tuesday in an attempt to reinstate a Trump-era policy that required migrants arriving at the southern border to wait in Mexico while applying for asylum, also known as the "Remain In Mexico" policy. The Trump administration implemented the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) program in January 2019; before that, migrants could wait inside the U.S. for a court decision, which often took months or years. President Biden ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to suspend the policy soon after he took office in January. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, along with Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, said the reinstatement of the program would "immediately remedy the influx of crime." In addition, the attorneys general are asking the court to award Texas and Missouri “the costs of this action and reasonable attorney’s fees.” The story received consistent coverage across the political spectrum.
