Wall Street Journal (News)
Mike Pence defended Republican running mate Donald Trump’s immigration position as consistent but responsive to practical considerations, a stance campaign manager Kellyanne Conway described as a softening in “approach” as opposed to policy, in separate television appearances Sunday.
Donald Trump’s experiment with “softening” his immigration policy came to a dramatic end Saturday in a fairgrounds livestock pavilion, with the Republican presidential nominee promising deportations within an hour of his inauguration.
“We are going to rid of the criminals, and it’s going to happen within one hour after I take office,” he said. “We will move justly, but we will move fast. Believe me.”
Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence said Sunday that nothing has changed about Donald Trump’s position on illegal immigration, as the campaign moved to tamp down criticism that the presidential nominee is flip-flopping on the signature issue of his run.
