Mamdani to Restart Homeless Encampment Sweeps After Weather-Related Deaths

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Wednesday he intends to restart homeless encampment sweeps, reversing his previous stance on the policy.

The Details: Mamdani previously called the policy under former Mayor Eric Adams a "failure", saying it didn't do enough to place people in permanent housing. He has promised a "far different" and humane approach to the practice, including "connect[ing] them with shelter." The Department of Homeless Services will reportedly oversee the sweeps and begin sending out 60 outreach workers this week to notify homeless New Yorkers of plans to clear them out of public spaces. 

For Context: At least 20 people recently died outdoors during a stretch of severe cold weather. Mamdani had paused Adams' policy for clearing encampments shortly after taking office in January.
