Trump Warns Iran Following Reports of Deadly Protests
Summary from the AllSides News Team
President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran on Friday following multiple human rights groups reporting that protesters have been killed by Iranian security forces.
The Details: Trump said on Truth Social that if Iran "violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go." Iran's Supreme National Security Council responded by saying they "consider the positions of the protesting merchants separate from those of the destructive elements, and Trump should know that American interference in this internal issue is equivalent to chaos across the entire region and the destruction of American interests." Protests have been growing in the country since last week over soaring prices, a fall in the nation's currency, and the government's handling of a water crisis, especially in and around the capital city of Tehran. The average annual inflation in December hit 42.2%, while year-on-year food inflation hit 72% and the rial weakened to a record low of roughly 1,420,000 per dollar. The protests, according to the Center for Human Rights in Iran and several other watch groups, have turned deadly, with some saying there are six deaths tallied, and others reporting the count is up to eight, including a 15-year-old. Iran has only acknowledged one death so far, who they claim was a member of the Basij militia force deployed to suppress unrest. The protests have reportedly spread to over 50 cities with anti-regime sentiment, and protestors have stormed buildings, burning some down.
For Context: Iran last year fought with Israel in what became known as the 12-Day war, during which the US entered the conflict, launching Operation Midnight Hammer which attacked three major Iranian nuclear facilities. The US intervention in June led to several instances of bias from US media outlets while causing some to ask whether the US should intervene militarily to prevent adversaries from acquiring nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction.
How The Media covered It: Outlets across the spectrum highlighted past protests turning deadly, with Al Jazeera (Lean Left bias) saying "the latest protests are the biggest since 2022," when the death of a woman in custody for allegedly violating Iran's strict dress code for women sparked "anger that left several hundred people dead." Other outlets on the left like the Washington Post (Lean Left) emphasized the reports from the human rights groups, mentioning that while Iranian authorities recognized the death of a militia force member, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, it was actually a protester. Other outlets, like Townhall (Right) asked "What the he** is going on in Iran," saying "Iran is blowing up" while highlighting several posts on social media depicting the unrest and destruction.
