Trump Pardons Former Honduras President Convicted of Drug Trafficking

Summary from the AllSides News Team

President Donald Trump announced on Friday he plans to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was convicted last year in the US on drug trafficking and weapons charges.

The Details: Trump announced on Truth Social that Hernandez had been "treated very harshly and unfairly" in a trial under the Biden administration and that he would grant him a full pardon. Former US officials described Hernandez as a key figure in a violent international drug trafficking network. In a separate post, Trump also expressed support for conservative Honduran presidential candidate Nasry "Tito" Asfura in the country's upcoming general election.

Previous Convictions: Hernandez served as president from 2014 to 2022. He was extradited to the US in 2022 and convicted in 2024 of conspiring to import 400 tons of cocaine into the US and possessing machine guns. He received 45 years in prison and an $8 million fine. During the trial, prosecutors said Hernandez ran Honduras like a "narco-state" and accepted millions in bribes, and federal authorities estimated his operations moved hundreds of tons of cocaine to the US. Hernandez's defense called the trial politically motivated.

For Context: The pardon comes as the Trump administration increases strikes on alleged drug boats off the coast of Venezuela and the Caribbean Sea. Since September, the Department of Defense has conducted 21 strikes, killing at least 83 people that it says is smuggling illegal drugs into the US.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets across the political spectrum noted the pardon comes amid escalating strikes on boats allegedly carrying drugs into the US. Washington Examiner (Lean Right bias) covered Trump's claim that Hernandez's conviction was a "Biden setup." It, and BBC (Center) noted Trump's pardon and public support for Asfura carry potential implications for US-Honduras relations, and possible influence over the Honduran election and broader regional dynamics. The New York Times (Lean Left) emphasized Hernandez's criminal activity and corruption, detailing his role in a long-running drug trafficking network, his use of bribes and state power, and the human cost of his actions in Honduras.
