Labor Day 2026: What to Make and Expect of the US Economy

Record-high gas prices, 162,000 new jobs, AI integration, and education – what should Americans make of these convoluted variables this Labor Day weekend?

For Context: The US added 162,000 jobs in August – 98% of which were filled by women, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) monthly jobs report. However, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1% from July, and some outlets framed heightened consumer prices as a counteraction to the jobs data.

Job Market Predictions: Educator Marissa Streit criticized the nearly seven million unfilled jobs in the US, attributing much of the vacuity to nationwide "struggle[s] to take initiative or accept constructive criticism," in an opinion for Fox News (Right bias). She described watching as "schools gradually abandoned one of their most important responsibilities: to build character… Educators like me were increasingly discouraged from giving failing grades, from delivering honest criticism or from enforcing meaningful consequences." Streit wrote, "When was the last time you saw a school-wide program dedicated to teaching morality? Or humility? Or courage? Or personal responsibility? Those virtues built America. And they used to define America's workforce."

The Economist (Lean Left) more optimistically analyzed that in spite of AI-related job cuts throughout the US, "the evidence so far is that AI is already creating a lot of jobs to replace those it has destroyed." It estimated, "AI has so far created around one million new jobs in America. That easily exceeds the roughly 200,000 layoffs attributed to AI since mid-2023, and appears more than enough to offset weaker hiring in many back-office roles." NPR (Lean Left) analyzed "future-proofed" jobs outlined by the BLS' "Occupational Outlook Handbook."

Commuters' Concerns: Many outlets also took to highlighting the record-high national gas ($4.14) and diesel ($5.85) prices this holiday weekend, and outlets on the left most emphatically attributed the rise to the Trump administration's unresolved conflict with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. USA Today (Lean Left), for example, criticized, "This is not a normal year," and cited both the Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars as the primary factors.

Outlets on the right criticized the conflicts as well, with The Daily Wire (Right), for example, reporting, "Much of the current pain at the pump stems from uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz amid the war between the United States and Iran." However, the outlet also gave voice to President Donald Trump, who said his late-August deal to grant the US majority control of over 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela "will substantially lower gas prices for all Americans, long into the future." The Wire added, "This week, the Trump administration maintained that oil coming through the Persian Gulf had returned to higher levels than before the war started."
