A Day Of Celebration: Outlets on the left generally framed the holiday passively, as a day of celebration and historical reflection. Associated Press (Left bias) highlighted such celebrations and community projects. The outlet emphasized that "former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed the first visitors to [the new Obama Presidential Center]" during the holiday. It stated, "The center honoring the nation's first black president has been designed to inspire people to make the change they want to see in their own communities. It's the kind of contemplation that also comes as Americans gather for Juneteenth."
The outlet β lastly β noted the "continuing struggle" of black Americans, and said, "The nation is deeply divided politically and grappling with renewed questions about the arc of racial progress as the Supreme Court hollowed out the Voting Rights Act, endangering black political representation in Congress."

More Work To Be Done: Outlets on the right published numerous opinion pieces about the holiday's modern-day political implications. The New York Post Editorial Board (Right), for example, said, "The black quest for freedom and dignity is inextricably linked to the larger ideas that breathed life into this nation, reminding us all that liberty and dignity are not to be taken for granted, but to be continually fought for and defended." The writers asserted, "Though black Americans still face obstacles, the new separatism β in which our different races, not our commonalities, will define us for good and all β will not advance the battle [Civil Rights leader W.E.B.] Du Bois waged."
Religion News Service (Center) furthered this narrative, highlighting ongoing activists' efforts across the political spectrum. Pastor Garland Hunt, president of Douglass Leadership Institute, spoke on "the journey of black America toward Christ and toward the Bible." His institute plans to soon launch its "Jeremiah 1:5" initiative, encouraging black clergy to support life at all stages β including in the womb. Methodist Rev. Stephen A. Green, on the other hand, plans to host the "Rock the Blessings" gospel music event and use his platform to address the controversial Supreme Court ruling on redistricting in Louisiana this past April.

For Context: Former President Joe Biden established the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in 2021, commemorating America's "Second Independence Day" β when the Civil War officially came to an end in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. There, the last enslaved black people were freed, over two years after former President Abraham Lincoln established the Emancipation Proclamation. Texas established Juneteenth as a state-level holiday in 1980.

The holiday traces to victorious Union Gen. Gordon Granger's June 19, 1865, order putting the Emancipation Proclamation into full legal effect across Texas and freeing all the state's remaining slaves. It has since spread, culminating in federal recognition in 2021.
But what, as a holiday for all Americans, should we make of it?...
For Christian evangelist Alveda King, niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Juneteenth is a time for remembrance and unity.
For the Rev. Stephen A. Green, an African Methodist Episcopal minister, it's a moment for supporting voting rights and spiritual freedom.
