World Leaders Pledge to Cut Methane Emissions by 30%

Summary from the AllSides News Team

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden and over 100 world leaders at the COP26 climate summit pledged to cut worldwide methane emissions by 30% by 2030. Biden also announced new EPA regulations to cut U.S. methane emissions by requiring oil and gas operators to more accurately detect and repair methane leaks. Biden’s plan circumvents Congress, where some House Democrats have pushed for methane fees but have not yet secured support from moderate Democrats. Also on Tuesday, leaders from countries accounting for 85% of the world’s forests pledged to halt and reverse deforestation.

Coverage was more prominently featured in left- and center-rated outlets than in right-rated outlets. Some major right-rated outlets did not cover this story directly as of Tuesday afternoon; Fox News, for instance, appeared to only cover GOP criticism of Biden’s participation at COP26.

President Biden on Tuesday led about half of the world’s countries in committing to stop deforestation and reduce methane emissions — seeking foreign policy wins at a climate conference in Scotland amid a stalled agenda at home.

More than 100 countries pledged to end deforestation by 2030 and more than 80 countries agreed to cut methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

But major countries sat out the methane pledge, including China, which is the world’s top methane emitter by far. Of the top six methane emitters, only the US signed on — with India, Indonesia, Iran and...
