Biden Announces Sanctions Against Russia Amid Russian ‘Invasion’ of Ukraine

Summary from the AllSides News Team

President Joe Biden announced economic sanctions against Russia on Tuesday, condemning what he said was the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Biden said the sanctions would include “comprehensive” actions against Russian debt, two Russian financial institutions, and individuals tied to Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Monday, Putin ordered troops to conduct “peacekeeping” operations in the separatist-contested Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine. That evening, a senior White House official told reporters that Monday’s sanctions against the contested regions were in response to Russia’s recognition of their “independence,” not Russia’s troop movements. On Tuesday, the European Union agreed to impose a smaller first round of sanctions against Russia. Additionally, Germany halted certification of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which would have transported Russian natural gas to Europe.

Coverage of Russia and Ukraine was widespread and prominently featured across the spectrum on Tuesday, especially following Biden’s speech. The story prompted sensationalist headlines and taglines in some right-rated outlets, including “Biden Slaps Putin” in the New York Post (Lean Right) and “Biden Blasts Putin” in Washington Examiner (Lean Right).
