Judge Rules Clinicians Cannot Object to Abortions on Moral or Religious Grounds

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A federal judge in New York rejected a rule Wednesday that would have permitted doctors and nurses to refuse performing an abortion on a moral or religious basis. The rule, proposed by the Trump administration and set to go into effect later this month, was opposed in several lawsuits, including one signed by 19 states, the District of Columbia and three local governments. While the majority of coverage presented both sides of the issue, left and center-rated outlets tended to focus coverage more on the lawsuits targeting the rule and the arguments against it; most right-rated outlets instead focused coverage on arguments in favor of the rule.

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that President Donald J. Trump's Health and Human Services "conscience rule" that allows doctors, nurses, physicians assistant and more health care providers to refuse participation in abortion based on moral and religious grounds was unconstitutional. New York attorney General Letitia James led the lawsuit on behalf of 19 states and the District of Columbia, which argued that the policy allows Americans to "openly discriminate and refuse to provide necessary health care to patients based on providers’ ‘religious beliefs or moral objections.'"
