Major websites experience outages, including the New York Times, CNN and Amazon Web Services
A massive outage struck large swaths of the Internet early Tuesday, causing the New York Times, CNN, BBC, Amazon, Hulu and other high-traffic websites and platforms to temporarily shut down.
The problems appear related to San Francisco-based cloud computing services provider Fastly, which said in a status update just before 7 a.m. Eastern time, that the “issue has been identified and a fix has been applied.” It remains unclear what caused the outage, which was largely resolved within an hour.
News outlets affected by the outage include BBC, the Guardian, Bloomberg News, the Financial Times and the Verge. High-traffic sites such as Reddit, Pinterest and Twitch also were affected. The British government’s website also was knocked offline.
Fastly runs a “content delivery network,” or a network of geographically dispersed servers meant to improve websites’ reliability and speed by cutting down the distance between users and servers. The 10-year-old company has a nearly $5 billion valuation.
Internet observability company Kentik said Fastly suffered a global outage beginning at 5:49 a.m., which caused a 75 percent drop in traffic from its servers.
Outages at content delivery networks or Internet service providers are not unheard of — and usually get resolved rapidly. Network infrastructure is often built with serval redundancies. But the cause of the outage remains unclear, and prompted some high-profile sites into workarounds early Tuesday morning.
Technology magazine The Verge published its website out of a Google Doc for a brief period while its web capabilities were sidelined.
