In August 2023, the AllSides team conducted a Small Group Editorial Review of SmartHER News that returned a bias rating of Center.
A small group of AllSides reviewers — one person each with a bias on the left, center, and right — reviewed content from SmartHER News for media bias. As a whole, AllSides did not detect noteworthy media bias on the SmartHER News website.
SmartHER used direct quotes as headlines on its homepage. While this may show bias on behalf of the quoted person(s), SmartHER did not display story choice bias significantly in one way or the other.
The team noted that SmartHER appeared to feature primarily short, facts-based news articles on its homepage, and a weekly U.S. news-based newsletter called The Scoop.

SmartHER News is a digital outlet founded in February 2018 by journalist and former Fox News and Fox Business TV anchor Jenna Lee. The site’s motto, as listed under its logo, is “Quick. Concise. Nonpartisan.” [retrieved August 9 2023]
According to SmartHER’s “About” page [retrieved August 9 2023], Lee founded the site on the basis of two questions: “What is ‘smart’ news?” and “What does it mean to truly empower women?” Lee says her time in the news industry made her “realize a sad reality: the news industry fails to provide a true public service to anyone ~ But especially not to the American woman.”
SmartHER describes its “simple” philosophy: “Quality shows respect. True "empowerment" is providing a woman solid information and then getting out of her way.”
