Trump Pushes For Ukraine Elections, Zelensky Responds

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Ukraine should hold elections, saying "it gets to a point where it's not a democracy anymore."

The Details: In an interview with Politico (Lean Left bias), Trump weighed in on Ukraine stalling elections over martial law, saying it is "an important time to hold an election," and explaining that "they're using war not to hold an election."  Trump also called Europe "decaying" and "weak" on immigration and Ukraine, saying, "They talk but they don't produce. And the war just keeps going on and on." Trump also suggested that Zelensky has not read the US proposal for peace, saying, "It would be nice if he would read it. You know, a lot of people are dying." Zelensky, responding to Trump's criticisms, said Tuesday that if US and European security guarantees are ensured, he is "ready for the elections."

For Context: Zelensky's presidential term expired in May 2024, but he has cited martial law and the constitution for allowing him to remain in power during the war. Last week, the Trump administration shared its vision for the United States' geopolitical strategy in the coming years, saying Europe is facing "civilizational erasure" and that "certain NATO members will become majority non-European." Zelensky's government has also had several resignations following a $100 million corruption scandal. The US peace proposal has yet to be accepted by either Ukraine or Russia, and according to Trump, "[Zelensky] is going to have to get on the ball and start accepting things" because they are "losing." Russian President Vladimir Putin also recently said Russia will seize all of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region by any means necessary.

How The Media Covered It: Breitbart (Right) highlighted Trump's criticisms of Europe, saying he "blasted Europe as 'decaying' and 'weak' on immigration and Ukraine," while adding that the rift between the US and some of its oldest allies is "deepening." The article also covered the calls for Ukraine to hold an election and Zelensky's response to the criticism. The Hill (Center) and the Washington Post (Lean Left), on the other hand, focused solely on the calls for Ukraine to hold elections, without mentioning the criticisms of European countries. The Washington Post focused most on Zelensky's response, highlighting Zelensky saying, "In the next 60 to 90 days, Ukraine will be ready to hold elections."
