Baltimore County Strikes Deal With ICE, Removed from Sanctuary Jurisdiction List

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced that Baltimore County, Maryland, is officially off the federal government's "sanctuary jurisdiction" list.

Key Details: The announcement last Friday followed a new agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to "collaborate on immigration enforcement". The Memorandum of Understanding requires the Baltimore County Police Department to notify ICE 48 hours before releasing migrant inmates and requires ICE to provide an officer to address any issues concerning the information exchange. In response, county officials stressed that the agreement does not change the county's approach to immigration or public safety, and it does not alter existing procedures.

For Context: In August, a list of sanctuary jurisdictions was published under an executive order from President Donald Trump, and Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier claimed that the county was erroneously included in the list. Baltimore County now becomes only the second jurisdiction to be removed from the list.
