Planned Parenthood May Now Accept Medicaid As Defunding Bill Expires

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Planned Parenthood has regained access to Medicaid funding for non-abortion services one year after President Donald Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" cut the organization off from federal funding. Some outlets on the right were critical of Congress for letting the ban expire, while outlets on the left focused on how the funding ban harmed Planned Parenthood over the past year.

The Details: The Big, Beautiful Bill cut off Planned Parenthood clinics from receiving Medicaid funding for non-abortion services such as providing birth control medications, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and cancer screenings for one year, with the funding ban expiring on July 4 of this year.

Disappointment From Conservatives: Daily Caller (Right bias) included statements from various supporters of the funding ban, including both members of Congress and activism groups. The president of the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America organization said, "Defunding Big Abortion is now the default expectation of the pro-life movement. When they return to D.C., Republicans must do all they can through reconciliation to once again block taxpayer dollars from Planned Parenthood and abortion businesses." The president of Students for Life of America warned that "Republicans should not take pro-lifers' votes for granted in the coming election cycle," according to Daily Caller.

Politico (Lean Left) also highlighted Republicans' reactions, writing that "conservative lawmakers and activists are furious with GOP leadership" for prioritizing other areas of the budget.

How Will This Affect Planned Parenthood? According to The Hill (Center), 30 Planned Parenthood clinics were forced to close due to the funding ban, resulting in "significant drops in packs of birth control pills being dispensed, as well as in the number of women who visited for IUDs and other long-acting contraception." The Hill also noted that "two-thirds of health center closures occurred in either rural areas, medically underserved areas, or areas experiencing shortages of primary care professionals."
