ACLU, Planned Parenthood Amongst Plaintiffs in Lawsuit Against Alabama's New Abortion Law

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Planned Parenthood were large names amongst a group of plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit against Alabama, Friday morning. The ACLU and Planned Parenthood sued the Attorney General of Alabama and a list of District Attorneys for the state, attempting to stall the most restrictive abortion law in the country from going into effect in November. The ACLU and Planned Parenthood have filed lawsuits against other states and their abortion bans; recently, a federal judge accepted an injunction against the State of Kentucky, striking down an abortion law which banned second trimester abortions, just weeks ago. The speculated goal, of both the states and the plaintiffs, seems to be to set up a duel in the ideologically conservative Supreme Court, in an attempt to overturn parts of Roe v. Wade.

(Reuters) - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit on Friday challenging a law enacted by Alabama last week that bans nearly all abortions and makes performing the procedure a felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison.

Planned Parenthood and the ACLU sued Alabama Friday over the state’s near-total abortion ban — which is exactly what Alabama Republicans wanted. It’s the first step in what promises to be a long legal battle over whether to let the ban go into effect.

Under Alabama’s law, abortions would only be allowed if a pregnancy posed a “serious health risk” to the mother. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, and abortion providers could spend up to 99 years in prison for performing the procedure.

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a federal lawsuit Friday challenging a new law in Alabama that bans most abortions in the state, save those to prevent a serious health risk to the mother.

The law reclassifies abortion as a Class A felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison for abortionists. Women who undergo an abortion, however, would not be criminally liable.

The complaint was filed in the United States District Court of the Middle District of Alabama.
